It’s hard to believe it is already May. This year seems to be flying by in a hurry. May is a month that has everyone enjoying springtime temperatures, outside activities, everything in bloom, and the very beginning of pool and beach season.
Some of our outside activities include walking and playing with our pets. We seem to see more of them around than ever, and, of course, each has its own personality.
I can attest personally to how a pet is truly part of the family as our toy parti poodle, Jackson, has been with us for more than 14 years. Of course, he is spoiled rotten. His biggest claim to fame is singing along to “Happy Birthday” on cue to our children each year. I’m sure my wife and I enjoy that more than the children do, but it’s hard to break tradition.
One of the themes for this month’s Cooperative Living is how pets enrich our lives. Our cover article is a great example, with interesting stories about our members’ children and their pets. We also have articles about the wild ponies on Chincoteague, gardening safely with pets, and, of course, lots of photos.
Along with celebrating the Memorial Day holiday, we also celebrate May as National Military Appreciation Month. Congress designated that honor to our servicemen and servicewomen in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the chance to publicly show their appreciation for troops, past and present. We thank our military for all they do to keep us safe and able to enjoy the freedoms of this great country.
