More teams. More sponsors. More money raised for Southside Opportunity Fund scholarships.
Last October’s Southside Opportunity Fund Skeet & Trap Classic was a record-breaking event. The shoot held at Arrowhead Gun Club in Lunenburg County netted more than $25,000 for scholarships for high school graduates across Southside Electric Cooperative’s 18-county service area. The
fundraising amount was a new high for the event.
Twenty-three teams, up from nine, took aim at clay targets flying across the sunny sky. Winning the team competition with 208 hits out of a possible 250 was the Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative squad of John Lee, Chris Metts, Stuart Bayne, Frank Myers and Casey Logan. Coming in second, only one behind with 207, was the SEC team of George Felts, Scott Diggs, Blake Poindexter, Wayne Paulett and Bobby Moseley. Third place, with 183, was the team of Kevin Dalton, David Redman, Scott Shorter, Brandon Shorter and Walker Coleman.
Metts was the overall individual winner, hitting 49 of 50 targets. Second was Savannah Morrow with 48. She was also the leading female shooter.
By hitting all 25 targets, Metts won the trap competition. Bayne was the leading skeet shooter after winning a shoot-off with Coleman. Each had hit 25 targets in the competition.
Besides more than double the teams, the number of sponsors increased 50%. Twenty businesses and individuals donated prizes for the event raffle.
“This year’s skeet and trap shoot was a fantastic success. Everything hit the target, starting with a beautiful fall day, more teams and sponsors, lots of great prizes and a new host for the event, Arrowhead Gun Club,” says Mark omas, SEC’s senior community relations coordinator who organized the event. “Many thanks to everyone who supported the shoot and helped make it possible to provide scholarships for deserving high school
graduates this spring.”
Since the program started in 2016, 171 scholarships totaling $199,000 have been awarded. Plans are already being made for this fall’s shoot back at Arrowhead. For more information, contact Thomas at 434-645-3276 or [email protected].
