May brings warmer weather, longer days and increased sun, just what farmers in Virginia and Maryland need to cultivate their crops. The theme of this month’s Cooperative Living is recognizing all those hardworking farmers who put fresh food on our tables.
Our May focus feature highlights kids growing up on farms, farm animals and people with fond farm memories.
Some of my earliest memories with my father were helping him in our garden where we mainly grew squash, tomatoes, cucumbers and string beans. As I recall, the biggest challenge to the garden was keeping me and my neighborhood friends out of it, as that was where a home run hit in our backyard baseball field would take us.
As a result, I enjoyed those home runs much more than my father did.
Speaking of baseball, we have a great piece about a group of board members from Choptank Electric Cooperative who got to meet a true legend of the game, Cal Ripken.
We also have a story about a Community Electric Cooperative board member who, along with her husband, received an award from the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation for distinguished community service.
May is the month in which we celebrate Memorial Day, along with recognizing National Military Appreciation Month. We appreciate all the military does to protect us, ensuring we can all enjoy the freedoms of this great country.
