Teen-Tracking Technology to Make the Summer Safer

by Laura Emery, Field Editor

Here are some great safety websites and apps to help you keep an eye on where your teens go and what they are viewing.

Its summertime, and that means your teenagers are out and about enjoying the much-anticipated break from school. Whether theyre at home, out with friends, or in the car, there are many ways to keep track of your teenagers to ensure they are safe during the summer.

 While Driving ...

According to a recent study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day annually sees a 43 percent jump in vehicle crashes and fatalities by teen drivers. However, there are many ways to beat the statistics with practical tips, online tools and apps to make sure teens practice safe driving habits.

To help parents and teens be safer drivers, visit AAAs website TeenDriving. AAA.com, which has tools like the StartSmart program to help parents become effective in-car coaches. Parents can also utilize the following free apps: Road Ready, sponsored by Ford, helps monitor teens during the first phase of driving while they are getting their learners permits and practicing to take tests for their licenses. The app is available at Apples App Store and allows parents to track their driving experience into an online log using GPS data and connection to an internet source.

Safe Driver, also for iPhone, is an app that alerts parents via text or email when the teen driver goes above the posted speed limit. It does this by using Google maps to find the speed limits in specific areas. Parents can also track the teens location at all times.

Text Arrest, is an app available for Android phones. This app is meant to discourage texting while driving by disabling the teens phone when in a moving vehicle. Sprint Drive First also discourages teen use of the phone while driving. This app, available only to Sprint customers, will send incoming calls directly to voicemail and incoming texts to receive an auto-reply when in a vehicle going 10 mph or higher. And, for AT&T customers, theres AT&T DriveMode, an app available on BlackBerry and Android phones. With a tap on the phone to enable, the phone sends an unavailable reply to incoming texts and emails (calls are sent to voicemail). It also silences tones for incoming texts, emails or calls and blocks web browsing and outgoing calls.

While Surfing ...

You can never be too safe when it comes to protecting your children from things they may encounter online, oftentimes unintentionally. After all, there is inappropriate content and online predators are always only a few clicks away on the internet. Parents are warned to monitor their childrens activities online by placing the computer in a central, exposed location, limiting kids hours online (especially at night), and warning them about the dangers of the internet. But, still, many parents have chosen to take the extra step of monitoring every click kids make with monitoring software that records websites they visit, chat conversations they engage in, and even emails sent and received.

OnlineFamily.Norton.com is a free software program that helps parents make sense of all the data being tracked. It streamlines the data from all your computers, so even the most unsavvy parents can determine whether or not their kids are getting into trouble online. Objectionable sites are highlighted for parents to review and block if necessary.

While Socializing ...

Teens are social creatures. And parents are paranoid creatures. This is where teen-tracking apps come into play. Here is a list of some apps that will help parents track their teens online comings and goings: mSpy, The Spy Bubble, The Phone Sheriff, MamaBear, and Mobicip. All of these apps will help parents monitor who their teens call, what they text, which apps they use, the number of contacts, GPS location, etc.

Life360 is a leading app for everyone in the family to use together. It helps keep tabs on all family members using the app and also see when kids have arrived or left their destinations. Used as more of a family communication device than a GPS tracker, Life360 also enables group messaging and instant VoIP conference calls to enable everyone to stay in contact.
