Fun With Photos

by Laura Emery, Field Editor

As summer comes to a close and the kids head back to school, youre probably left with a sense of sadness that the months of basking on the beach and partying poolside will soon be a distant memory.

As we move into a new season with new memories on the horizon, you can rest assured that there are plenty of fun things you can do with all those summer photos collected on your hard-drive and/or smartphone. Here are some creative and unique ways to optimize how your summer memories live on:

www.picmonkey.com

PicMonkey lets you edit a photo without even registering. Use basic tools (crop, rotate, exposure, colors, sharpen, resize), apply effects, touch up images, add text, frames, and other overlays, and more. Then you can save your image and blast it out into the ether that is social networking.

If you want to use the more advanced editing tools, however, you will need to upgrade to a Royale Membership for a nominal monthly fee of $5 (or choose the option for $33 annually). With the upgraded membership, you get ads-free editing and full access to all the crowned features. If youre not a graphic artist, this is the way to go. Its easy to use and offers you the ability to quickly perfect your precious pictures. And, yes, you can even give your photo subject a Nip Tuck and easily shave off unwanted pounds with results that are nearly seamless to the eye. Or, for a more fun appearance, you can jazz up your photos with themes and overlays (or add facial hair and hats whatever suits your fancy).

Once youve done all the editing you want with your summer photos, the next step is to compile them in handy keepsake books or create personalized photo-based products and gifts. The books can be made for you to enjoy for years to come, or they can be created and given out as gifts to the ravenous fans (grandparents) of your impetuous little models.

Shutterfly.com, the popular online photo company among the first in the digital age to use its website for uploading and storing photos, printing, creating photo CDs and generating personalized photo-based consumer products and gifts is the place to go. One of its most popular features is the ability to create beautiful photo books, complete with glossy full-photo covers, smooth pages, and spine labeling. Shutterfly has been in the consumer photo business for a long time, and that experience clearly shows in the smooth operation of its photo-book service.

Perhaps youre leery of the dreaded over-sharer label on social networks? Well, thats where blogs come into the picture. Here, you can create a blog about your summertime escapades and post whatever you want, whenever you want. This is a great way to share your images and memories without annoying your social-networking friends.

Blogger.com is an online service owned by Google that publishes single- or multi-user blogs created entirely by the user. The service has quickly become the preferred choice of many novice bloggers and is one of the easiest methods of creating and publishing a blog for free. You can choose from easy-to-use templates with flexible layouts and hundreds of background images, or edit your blogs CSS and HTML to create something entirely unique. And if youre completely new to the blogging experience and dont even know how to start, just Google blogging basics and plenty of step-by-step tutorials will pop up.

Another great thing to do with your photos is share them with other Cooperative Living magazine readers by submitting them for the popular say cheese column (reader-submitted photos compiled into fun themes each issue). You can do this by emailing them directly to [email protected], or by posting them on the Cooperative Living magazine Facebook page (and be sure to like us).

Either way, please send the highest-resolution version of your image that you have (copying it directly off Facebook will not usually give you enough resolution to print in a magazine), along with your name, location, detailed description of the photo, and your email address. If your photo meets the criteria for a future say cheese column and is published, you will receive a $10 Amazon gift card credit (that comes to you through email once your photo is published).

So if youve got a handful of unique, beautiful, or fun photos that youd like to share with other Cooperative Living readers (Why just send one?!), send them on in and let your memories live on in a magazine that reaches over 1.25 million people.
